Case Study
Maurizio's Magazines (June 28 - August 23, 2009)
From the Exhibition Wall Text:
Maurizio was a small-time publisher of decidedly non-commercial magazines. In 1995, with the French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, he started Permanent Food. For the first three issues, the duo asked artist-friends to send them altered images that they subsequently published. Later issues -- fifteen were published before his death -- were realized in collaboration with Paola Manfrin, an art director in Milan. Their content consisted solely of images stolen from other magazines.
In the spring of 2002, Maurizio started a separate magazine titled Charley. Published in collaboration with Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick, Maurizio's collaborators on The Wrong Gallery, it presented the work of other artists, but did so by reproducing images culled from preexisting catalogues, brochures, press clips, postcards, and other visuals. Five issues of Charley were published.
In an interview in 2002, Maurizio said, "I am a copier. I'm like a Xerox machine . . . I am really seduced by images that already belong to everybody."
